HALLOWEEN

This year the Halloween festivities were another big hit! As usual the afternoon was full of fun and games, as well as other spooky Halloween activities. I had an absolute great time at my station playing Trivia with all of the students. We acted out different holiday scenes and monsters, did the mummy wrap, and spent the hour just laughing and giggling together. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays so it was wonderful being able to celebrate at school - I really enjoyed the entire experience!

THANKSGIVING by NATALIE BURNS

This past semester, I had the amazing opportunity to study in Sevilla, and while I was there, I was fortunate enough to be able to share some of my own culture with Spanish students.  Shortly before the American holiday of Thanksgiving, I presented about the holiday to students in various levels of English classes.  Since I was in Spain learning Spanish, it was interesting to be able to experience learning a language from the teaching perspective as well.  I had a lot of fun with the students, and I also gained a new appreciation for what teachers do when they help students learn a new language.  I hope that this will make me both a better student and teacher in my future language learning experiences.

In my presentation, I spoke about the history of Thanksgiving and current traditions that are part of the holiday.  I told the students about the Puritan origins of Thanksgiving as well as the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims and the Native Americans who helped them survive their first winter in the New World.  The students completed a word search and a crossword puzzle to help them learn the vocabulary.  We all had some laughs when one of the word search words was “pie.”  Language can get confusing when a word means a tasty dessert in English and a body part in Spanish!  The students also enjoyed an opportunity to sing and dance along with a traditional American folk song, “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain.”  It seemed that the students had a great time learning a little bit about American culture and the English language!

TWO AMERICAN FRIENDS AT SCHOOL

Presenting to the students was a great experience. We enjoyed teaching them about the state of Michigan, they were very interactive and asked many questions. We enjoyed being able to open their minds to a new culture and  sharing with them the similarities and differences between the United States and España. It was great to be interviewed by a intelligent young reporter about our lives in Michigan, he asked many informative questions. Also, the students were curious to see if the United States had a traditional dance, so we showed them how to swing dance. After we showed them swing dancing we were curious about the traditional dance of Sevilla, the Sevillana, and some of the students volunteered and taught us. We enjoyed it and it is a experience we will never forget.

Writing: Advantages and disadvantages

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TELEVISION II

ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES

Good company
Can be educational
Cheap
Good for children
Good for old people living alone

Bad for the eyes
Less communication+ family problems
Discourages people from taking exercise
Makes reading seem less attractive
Stop people going to theatre/cinema
Bad for the sports industry

We are going to deal with the advantages and disadvantages of television. Watching television has both advantages and disadvantages indeed.
There are several drawbacks to watch tv as for example the fact that it is bad for the eyes or that family life is less communicative than in the past.
However, there are many advantages as having the experience of good company while it is turning on. A  further advantage is that many good tv programmes can be very educational and implement family members in general and young people’s, in particular, knowledge.
In short, it can be seen that the number of advantages is similar to that of disadvantages but it’s a very popular type of media.

AMERICAN FRIENDS AT SCHOOL

Last week a team of American people from Florida visited us. They shared information about their state and their country with us. We saw a ppt about American greetings, sports and traditions in the States. We took part in different quizzes and got lots of candies. At the end we made some chat corners where we could talk to one of the American friends more personally. It was really cool!!!! They've promised to come back soon. That's very good news!!!

PEACE DAY 2013

Last Wednesday we celebrated the World Peace Day with lots of activities. The above pic shows Kelly, our Language Assistant and one of the bilingual group students taking part in our charity race in favour of Honduras. It was great to see students and teachers running together or playing football on a festival day. We also had a good time when we saw a very creative lipdub made by our Special Education students, the Year-3 bilingual ones and some teachers. At last four NGO volunteers were chatting about their humanitarian projects facing the school oldest students at the Arts Centre in Guillena. Lots of fun, isn't it?
